I think these suggestions are great because it not only benefits the company, but the interns as well. I am currently an intern from Drexel University working at a marketing company. They were so busy guiding their clients through social media that they didn't get a chance to work on their own social media plan.

I have recently been researching and developing a plan to integrate social media into their marketing plan. I think this is a great experience and I definitely think companies don't tap into the strengths of their interns. In terms of social media, college age students may have a leg up compared to their boss. We grew up with Myspace, then Facebook, to Twitter, and started to use LinkedIn to post our resumes, it's like second nature!

Thanks for this post, and I hope that companies start to see the potential in their interns!

The internships are going good now. I received an overwhelming response and the interns seem to be happy. The internship plan is working in favor of my marketing plans.

Hi Aaron,

This is probably the first time I am visiting your blog. Being an online media company owner I wonder why I did not come across your blog before. This article was of great help as I have been planning an online social media internship for the past 2 months but coudn't get down to something concrete.

I have a website www.youthkiawaaz.com, which is a platform for the youth to express themselves over various issues. I had a good writer base but lately I realized that social media is not working that well. Even though I consult bigger bloggers like Darren Rowse and John Chow, but it hasn't been late since I realized that it wasn't of much help as I was already implementing the steps they suggested.

Your points above have been of great help and trust me, I will start social media internships next week itself.

It would be a full plate! The great thing about interns are that they are typically very ambitious and work really hard to prove themselves. As far as an unpaid intern...well, you pay for what you get. In the grand scheme of costs, a good intern is worth paying for.
